Objective
It is important to have a clear objective so that we are able to determine the appropriate scope and assessment depth. Everything is possible: from an efficient quick scan to a high-quality and very detailed LCA (cradle-to-cradle, cradle-to-grave, gate-to-gate, well-to-wheel, and more). In some cases LCA is used for very specific services, such as the preparation of an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) or BREAAM certification of a building. Mantis Consulting works according to the procedures set out in ISO standards 14040 and 14044.
Data Collection
In the data collection phase, we build a dataset in consultation with your organization. This dataset is often referred to as life cycle inventory (LCI). This dataset allows for the quantification of environmental inputs and outputs. This inventarisation effort can differ greatly depending on the depth of the assessment and the complexity of the production process or supply chain. Mantis Consulting then processes the dataset into an input-output flow model.
Impact assessment
During the life cycle impact analysis (LCIA), we use the input-output flow model to evaluate the environmental impact. We summarize the impacts based on the relevant categories. These categories can vary between assessments but often include: environmental cost indicator (EQI), global warming potential, acidification, and more. Aggregated environmental impact indicators are possible, for example the Environmental Cost Indicator (ECI). Finally, the results are evaluated and opportunitites for improvement are identified.
The Result?
LCA report with detailed insight into the environmental impact of a product or service
Impact categories per production step or per supply chain
Identification of key environmental issues in the LCI (life cycle inventory) and LCIA (life cycle impact analysis) phases
Interpretation of the environmental impacts and identification of opportunities for improvement
